Mauritius has been ranked eighth in the 2012 Report on Economic Freedom which has been compiled by the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank.

The ranking evaluates economic freedom by looking at the Rule of Law, regulatory efficiency, the size of Government and open markets.

Mauritius is also the first Sub-Saharan African Country to enter the top 10 ranking.

Hong Kong has retained its position as the world's freest economy whilst Singapore ranked second, closely followed by Australia, New Zealand and Switzerland.
